Crafting Consistency in Hiring
Revolutionizing recruitment at Mr. Blanco's, where we're flipping the script on hiring, one system at a time.
π Welcome to The Delaney Digest!
Hey everyone, welcome to the third edition of our newsletter journey. In this week's "Behind the Griddle," I'm peeling back the curtain to reveal the cogs and gears of our revamped hiring process at Mr. Blanco's. After a seismic shift in partnership, we've been diligently fine-tuning our operations, and I'm excited to share our latest innovation.
π Behind the Griddle: Crafting Consistency in Hiring
In the aftermath of a buyout, I've grabbed the reins at Mr. Blanco's with a vision to transform our brand with fresh vigor. In this edition of "Behind the Griddle," we're pulling back the curtain to reveal the strides we're making to enhance our operations, with a spotlight on revamping our hiring process.
Consider Mr. Blanco's hiring as meticulously crafted as a theme park experience β from the anticipation in the queue, symbolized by our application process, to the thrill of the ride, paralleled by the journey of employment. We aim for a system so precise, it weaves out confusion, ensuring each candidate's journey is unequivocal and uniformly splendid, mirroring a Disney-like adventure from application to employment.
Hereβs how it unfolds: The first interaction, our online hiring survey, is akin to the queue line β structured, engaging, and informative. It discerns suitability based on availability, experience, and more, as straightforwardly as a ride operator checks your height. Only those meeting our criteria proceed, mirroring the careful selection before boarding a roller coaster. Those not fitting the bill receive a courteous 'thanks but no thanks' via an automated response.
Zooming into the next stage, the Zoom interview is as pivotal as the safety briefing before the ride takes off. We delve into situational questions like, "Tell me about a time you successfully helped a guest." We're not fishing for textbook answers; we're looking for the essence of their response, the sentiment that shows us their true potential. In this stage, we also verify alignment on practicalities β from salary expectations to agreement with our hygiene standards. The aim is to ensure the candidate and Mr. Blanco's are on the same track.
This approach stands in stark contrast to the industry norm. While many major food operators still rely on the hit-or-miss gut feelings of undertrained managers, we've shifted to a systematic approach. Why? Because when you're winging it, you get unpredictable results, and unpredictability is the antithesis of scalability.
Advance from the Zoom screen, and the candidate faces the final boss β the in-person interview with the General Manager. It's a new level, with a fresh set of questions, but the scoring remains as systematic as before, eliminating any undue influence or bias.
Since the roll-out of this hiring coaster, we've welcomed around 50 prospects into the fold, each experiencing the same rigorous yet fair process. We've ticked off a major box in our operational playbook. Now, we don't just hope for a great team β we systematically build one. Thereβs always room for tweaking, but rest assured, we're on the path to consistent, quality hires that align with our vision.
We're not just flipping burgers; we're engineering a seamless system to ensure a great experience, both for our guests and our team. ππ’π οΈ
